Description

In monitoring the National Solar Observatory website, I noticed this large solar prominence present on the morning of February 6th. Seeing conditions were reasonably good, and so I thought it was worth trying to capture an image. The structure within the prom is quite impressive!

For both the chromosphere and solar prominence, I acquired ~700 frames, stacking the best 50%. Exposure was 9.25 ms in each case, with the gain set to 383 for the prominence image and 237 for the chromosphere. As with most of my solar images, this is a composite, with the chromosphere inverted and pasted as a separate layer over the prominence image in PhotoShop to provide a more natural transition to the edge. The color, of course, is added artificially.

Revision B includes an image of a sun spot and solar prominences, taken during the same session.
